Julia Morgan Legacy Event- Sunday, March 5, 11am - 2pm

Join the Santa Monica Conservancy and the Association for Women in Architecture + Design in a special commemoration of architect Julia Morgan, California’s first woman architect. Noted for her collaboration with William Randolph Hearst to create Hearst Castle in San Simeon, Morgan left a legacy of more than 700 projects in her nearly five decades of practice. Posthumously awarded the AIA’s highest honor, a Gold Medal, her brilliant and pioneering work has only recently won public recognition.

From 11am-2pm, tour the Morgan designed Guest House and pool, which comprise the historic core of the Beach House as Santa Monica Conservancy docents provide insight into Morgan’s life and work.

12:30-1:30 (Doors open at noon, first come-first served starting with RSVPs)

A panel discussion on 'Women Designers Then & Now'

Julia Morgan’s challenges as a pioneering female architect have been well documented during and after her career. As we mark 60 years since her passing in 1957, what challenges still remain for women today, and what has changed? The Association for Women in Architecture + Design (AWA+D) gathers female architects, planners and designers to explore the milestones of Julia Morgan and current advancements, continued challenges, and opportunities for change within the field of design.
